1.
When Youtube makes doesn’t let you skip a long
advertisement
WHY IT HAPPENS: Youtube is paid to put ads before videos.
Sometimes the site allows you to skip the advertisement after a few seconds and
sometimes Youtube doesn’t offer a skip button. This depends on how much money
the company paid for the advertisement.
2.
Not being able to find a space to study in the
library around midterms and finals
WHY IT HAPPENS: There simply isn’t enough room in the
libraries to satisfy the need around exam times. There are so many students
that all want to study in the library and the space isn’t sufficient.
3.
Finally finding a seat in the library, but
there’s no outlet to charge your computer or phone
WHY IT HAPPENS: Not every table or desk is equipped with or
near an outlet, and all the seats near outlets are most likely occupied because
of the need to charge devices.
4.
The huge lines to meet with academic advisors
during drop/add week
WHY IT HAPPENS: Many students need to meet with an advisor
to figure out course schedules. There are so many students that have questions
and only a few advisors which means you could be standing in line for hours
before you meet with anyone.
5.
When none of my friends can agree on plans
WHY IT HAPPENS: All of our schedules are so hectic with
classes and extracurricular activities that it becomes difficult to agree on a
date and time to carry out our plans.
6.
When I have class all the way across campus and
I don’t have enough time to get from Point A to Point B
WHY IT HAPPENS: Sometimes classes that I need to take in a
semester happen to be really far from one another and there’s only 15 minutes
to get from class to class. If you don’t have a bike or a scooter and you miss
the bus, you could end up being late to class.
7.
When somebody is walking really slowly in front
of you and you can’t pass them
WHY IT HAPPENS: People may not have the same sense of
urgency that you do or you could be in a rush to get somewhere and they aren’t
so they’re just taking a leisurely stroll.
8.
When people bring loud food like chips into
quiet parts of the library and you can’t focus on what you’re doing
WHY IT HAPPENS: They don’t realize how loud they’re being or
they just couldn’t find another place in the library to sit and eat their food.
9.
When somebody takes up class time by asking a
question that is only pertinent to them instead of meeting with the professor
after class
WHY IT HAPPENS: They may think the question is relevant but
it only applies to them. They could also just not want to visit their professor’s
office hours so they ask in class.
10. When
my IPhone says it has 50% battery and then randomly dies
WHY IT HAPPENS: Some iPhones have defective batteries and
this might be the case for mine. Apple also recently said they slow the battery
life of some of their older phones so this could also be a factor.
11. When
I am registering for classes and there are no more seats left in a class I need
WHY IT HAPPENS: Because UF is such a large university, there
are thousands of kids that need the same classes that I do and some of them
might have better registration times, so classes fill up quickly.
12. When
I clean my apartment and my friends come over and trash it again
WHY IT HAPPENS: Nobody respects your space as much as you
will. My friends come over to hang out and have a good time, and they’re not
necessarily worried about keeping my apartment clean while they’re here.
13. When
Study Edge doesn’t make videos for the classes that I need
WHY IT HAPPENS: Study edge gives study materials for classes
that the majority of UF students are taking. Once you get into the higher-level
courses, there are fewer students taking those classes so they don’t feel the
need to add those classes to their tutoring services. In addition, they might
not have tutors that are familiar enough with the material in those classes to
offer sufficient study tips.
14. When professors think students understand the
lecture material but really nobody knows what’s going on
WHY IT HAPPENS: Sometimes students are too afraid to speak
up and say they don’t understand because they fear judgment from their
professor or their peers.
15. When
people judge me for watching reality TV
WHY IT HAPPENS: Most people think that reality TV is
mind-numbing garbage, but it is actually really entertaining and helps me to
relax when I have free-time in my hectic schedule.
16. When
I take a picture with my friends and I look horrible but they post it anyway
WHY IT HAPPENS: If my friend looks good in the picture, she
doesn’t care how I look because she knows she looks pretty. Plus, who knows how
many more pictures we’ll have to take before we can both agree on one.
17. When
I send an ugly snapchat to someone and they screenshot it
WHY IT HAPPENS: My friends don’t seem to understand the “no
screenshots please” rule in our snapchat agreement. The screenshots serve for
good blackmail material in the future.
18. When
I can’t find my textbooks online in PDF form so I have to pay lots of money for
them
WHY IT HAPPENS: Textbooks are really expensive, so I always
try to find them online. If there is no online version I’m forced to actually buy
the hardcopy.
19. When
I go to the gym and all the treadmills are taken
WHY IT HAPPENS: My apartment has a pretty small gym so there
isn’t that much equipment available to begin with. If I go during a popular
time, there is just no way I’m going to get to use the machines I want to
because so many people are already there.
20. When
I pay for someone and they don’t ever pay me back
WHY IT HAPPENS: I assume they forget to pay me back, or they
could just hope that I won’t remember so they don’t have to give me the money
they owe me.
This assignment was really difficult for me. After about
five bugs it became difficult to come up with more. I asked my friends about
things that bug them to try and gain some more ideas, but after a few they too
became stumped. After writing my bugs they just seem so trivial given that
there are bigger issues in the world.
The way you look at the bugs from this point of view shows that there is a reason for everything and that the issues are not all as critical or damaging to you as you might think in the moment. I think writing down and thinking about all the things that bug you like this is very healthy and helps gain a new perspective on life and the little things that bother you. Very well written and thought out.
ReplyDeleteYour bugs are very relatable to UF students and just college students in general. However, I think that the assignment was geared more toward products and services problems that bug you, not really people's actions like on a few of the bugs. Other than that, I think you had a pretty solid list of bugs. I was also having trouble after the first few bugs I listed, like you, and had to ask my sister and roommate if they had any more ideas.
ReplyDeleteI think #7 is a very relatable bug that many can very well relate to for many different cities across the world. Especially within the fast-paced metropolitan cities. What I found interesting is that many of these can be prevented in one form or another. I do think some of the bugs, such as a #12 and #15 are more personal bugs that aren’t relatable to most but to some.
