I have been exposed to entrepreneurship my whole life. My
mother is an industrial engineer who started her own company, Productivity Apex
Inc., about fifteen years ago. When she was raising me, she used to take me to
her office because she wanted me to learn about her business at a young age so
that one day I could take it over. As I grew up, I started interning for her
and taking on real responsibilities. I started with simple tasks like updating
her timecards in Excel. Over time she let me proofread her proposals that she
would then send on to clients and test her products to make sure they were user
friendly. Being exposed to her line of work at such a young age really impacted
me as I have decided to major in Industrial and Systems Engineering here at the
University of Florida. Seeing the success that she has had without any help is
amazing; the picture that I have included is a photograph of my mother on the
cover of a business magazine. I enrolled in ENT 3003 to learn about entrepreneurship
and how ideas come about so that I can potentially implement what I learn when I
take over my mother’s business. I am excited to learn everything I can about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

Very inspiring personal story! The value of the hands on approach with your mother's business will be significant I am sure. Seeing the attributes your mother has will help you develop successful habits. I also hope to find out how to cultivate ideas and learn how to be successful in this class. Great blog post and awesome picture of your mom being recognized for her work.
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome story! I love that you've taken so much inspiration from your mom, and I can relate as I've had a similar experience with my grandfather. It's really awesome to be able to have someone like that to look up to and, if not guide you on a life path, at least be a good role model for the benefits of hard work and determination. I like how you talked about wanting to implement the ideas of the class, as I think it really shows what I think the point of the class is, which is a framework of ideas and skills to translate into whatever field work in, regardless of major.
ReplyDeleteThis post was a nice read. I also grew up having an entrepreneurial mother that opened her own business like you. It's interesting to know that other people have had a similar experience as mine growing up. I hope this class will give you what you would like to learn so that you can improve your mother's business.
