The book that I read for this week’s reading reflection was
The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users by Guy Kawasaki. The
general theme of the book was using social media to market for yourself and
your product or brand. Kawasaki talks about the ways to improve your social
media pages not only to look good to potential employers but to also get
content across to your audience and express yourself. I think the book
connected to ENT3003 because it reminded me of the human capital we talked
about. By using social media to portray yourself, you can show your human
capital- your skills and knowledge- to your audience. If I were to create an
exercise for the class I think it would simply be checking one another’s social
media to see if there would be anything “inappropriate” to potential employers
and correcting those things. I think the thing that surprised me the most was
that Kawasaki was more well-versed in social media than I was. I don’t mean
this in an arrogant way, but what I’m trying to say is that given that I’m a millennial
and I grew up with this technology, I didn’t think there would be things I didn’t
know how to do. For example, he talks about creating “secret” boards on
Pinterest, which I didn’t know was something one could do. I also learned just
how useful social media can be when applying for jobs.
I read the same book for the assignment as well! I agree that social media definitely increases human capital. I think your class exercise is something that is incredibly useful in the real world. I don't think that most of us actually realize that our potential employers look at our social media accounts and base part of their decision on that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that social media is a great way to increase human capital! The book I read featured similar ideas about utilizing social media and the internet effectively, and I think this book compliments that well! I think you did a really good and thorough job with your reflection, and I like what you were able to take away from the book. Potential employers really do have an advantage now in background checking through social media, and it's up to us to make sure we're showing our best selves, not our worst.
ReplyDeleteSocial media is an amazing opportunity towards building human capital as well as distributing information through a powerful method of marketing. You mentioned on Kawasaki's statement on using social media to promote and appeal while getting enough content across is beneficial towards building human capital. As well, when applying for jobs, it is important to give off to the public an image you want people to perceive you as (in a good way of course)!
